Setting Day - Avoiding Soft Shell Snow Crab

Once the season has started Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will have observers aboard various vessels. They are sampling the catch (both sellable crab as well as soft, small and female crab). This data is used for scientific monitoring of the fishery and provides inseason maps of high concentrations of soft shelled crab. The fisherman are encourage to avoid or leave areas with increasing amounts of soft shell crab. Below is an example of the data the fisherman will received during the season. If the soft shell crab density gets too high certain blocks (zones) can be closed.
